In a bid to realise the use of alternate cooking fuel technology, the Namrup-based Assam Petrochemicals Limited (APL) recently on 6th October 2018, unveiled India's first methanol-based cooking fuel in Assam.
The methanol-based cooking fuel will be 30% cheaper than conventional LPG fuel, cleaner and greener and easily transportable.
In comparison to the LPG cooking fuel, which is used in a liquefied gas form, the methanol fuel will come in vapour form. Unlike LPG, which can explode if it catches fire, the methanol canister will burn out without any explosion.
NITI Aayog member and former director general of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Vijay Kumar Saraswat inaugurated the ‘Green and Clean Fuel Pilot Project on Methanol cooking Stove’.
The methanol-based cooking fuel is the first of its kind in realising the concept of NITI Aayog’s programme of ‘Methanol Economy’.
Initially, the product will be available only in the Northeastern Region.
NITI Aayog’s Methanol Economy: Through this programme, NITI Aayog aims to replace 20% of the crude imports with methanol alone. It will mitigate the rise in the price of fuels and bring down pollution by 40%.
This initiative has also been adopted by various countries like Japan, China, Italy, Sweden, the US, Israel, Australia etc.
