Justice Surya Kant took oath as the new Chief Justice of Himachal High Court on 4th October 2018.
Justice Surya Kant name was recommended by the Supreme Court collegium nearly after nine months. As the post of Chief Justice of the Himachal High Court had been lying vacant since April 2017.
Justice Surya Kant was the Advocate General of Haryana till his elevation as a permanent judge to the Punjab and Haryana High Court in January 2004.
Justice Surya Kant was born on 10th February 1962 in Hisar, Haryana. He did graduation & post-graduation from Hisar in 1981. Later, he acquired a bachelor’s degree in Law in 1984 from Maharishi Dayanand University, Rohtak.
Justice Surya Kant also held the distinction of standing First Class First in his Master's degree in Law in 2011 from the Directorate of Distance Education, Kurukshetra University, Kurukshetra.
Justice Surya Kant began practicing law at the district courts, Hisar in 1984 and then migrated to Chandigarh in 1985 to practice at the Punjab and Haryana High Courts. He specialised in Constitutional, Service and Civil matters.
Justice Surya Kant was also the youngest Advocate General of Haryana on 7th July 2000.
