International Day of Non-Violence Celebrations on 2nd October: Details, Aim, Significance, History

The International Day of Non-violence is observed on 2nd October every year around the world on the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. India's 'Father of Nation'.

The International Day of Non-violence observance aims to promote the principles of non-violence through education and public awareness and is observed by all members countries of the United Nations.

In India, the International Day of Non-violence is celebrated as Gandhi Jayanti to mark the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi who was a leader of the Indian independence movement and also a pioneer of the philosophy of non-violence

The United Nation General Assembly (UNGA) through its resolution dated 15 June 2007 established the International Day of Non-Violence to disseminate the message of non-violence through education and public awareness. 

The resolution reaffirms the universal relevance of the principle of non-violence and the desire to secure a culture of peace, tolerance, understanding, and non-violence.

The International Day of Non-violence observance has much significance for India, as it was at the frontrunner in the adoption of the resolution that was co-sponsored by 140 member-countries in the United Nations. 

The first International Day of Non-Violence was observed on 2 October 2007.
