According to a study by Seattle-based Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation published in The Lancet, India ranks 158th in the world for its investments in education and healthcare. It was released on 25th September 2018.
The Lancet study survey was done of 195 countries.
According to the survey, Finland tops the list in the two key sectors.
India ranked 158th in the world, below countries like Sudan (157th), Azerbaijan, China, and Bosnia Herzegovina.
Countries in the South Asian region that have fared better than India in terms of human capital include Sri Lanka (102), Maldives (116), Bhutan (133) and Nepal (156) while India is ranked between Sudan and Namibia at 157 and 159, respectively. Countries ranking below India in this report include Bangladesh (161), Pakistan (164) and Afghanistan (188).
Earlier in 1990, India ranked 162nd.
It is followed by Namibia at 159th.
The United States ranked 27th, while China placed at 44th and Pakistan 164th.
Human capital is a measure of the education and health levels in a population, expressed as the number of expected years lived between the age of 20 and 64.
It also accounts for life expectancy, functional health, years of schooling and education quality.
