Vietnam's President Tran Dai Quang passed away at the age of 61 years, on 21st September 2018, in a military hospital in Hanoi after a prolonged serious illness.
President Tran Dai Quang was sworn in as the President of the communist country in 2016, following a stint as public security minister.
Vice-President Dang Thi Ngoc Thinh will take over as the acting president until a new president is chosen by the communist party's Central Committee and voted on by the National Assembly.
President Tran Dai Quang attended a police college and began his career in the police. He joined the Communist Party of Vietnam in July 1980, became an official party member in July 1981 and slowly rose through the ranks at the powerful Public Security Ministry before being appointed a minister in 2011.
President Tran Dai Quang in 1997, became a member of the Politburo of the Communist Party of Vietnam and a member of the Central Committee of the party.
President Tran Dai Quang served as the Minister of Public Security from 2011 to 2016, before being elected as the president in April 2016. In between, he also served as the Vice Head of Committee on HIV / AIDS Prevention from 2011 to 2014.
President Tran Dai Quang was nominated as the President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam in January 2016 at the 12th Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam and his appointment was confirmed in April 2016 by Vietnam’s National Assembly.
President Tran Dai Quang was known for his hard-line approach to dissent. Many of the dissidents were jailed under his leadership.
