Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 12th September 2018, has approved the introduction of Bill in Parliament for amendment of NID Act, 2014 to include the four new National Institutes of Design (NID).
All these four NID institutes are National Institute of Design, Amaravati/Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh; National Institute of Design, Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh; National Institute of Design, Jorhat, Assam and National Institute of Design, Kurukshetra, Haryana.
All these four NID institutes will be declared as Institutions of National Importance (INIs) at par with the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad.
Some other minor amendments to the Act includes re-naming of NID Vijayawada as NID Amaravati.
National Institute of Design (NID) is a design school in Ahmedabad, India. It was established in 1961. Its current chairman is Anand Mahindra.
NID functions as an autonomous body under the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India.
NID is recognised by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research under the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Government of India, as a scientific and industrial design research organisation.
NID is accorded as "Institute of National Importance" by Act of Parliament, under the National Institute of Design Act, 2014
