External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will meet US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Secretary of Defence James Mattis in New Delhi for the 2 plus 2 Dialogue on 6th September 2018.
External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj will have a separate bilateral meeting with Mike Pompeo while Nirmala Sitharaman will have a one-on-one meeting with James Mattis.
The Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff General Joseph Dunford will also be part of the US delegation.
India & United States will discuss the long-pending Communications, Compatibility, Security Agreement, and COMCASA
The 2+2 dialogue will replace the Strategic and Commercial Dialogue held between the foreign and commerce ministers of the two countries during the Obama administration.
India-US sides will also focus on strengthening and expansion of strategic, security and defence cooperation between the two countries, not on the signing of individual arms deals.
India-US 2+2 Dialogue will help India obtain critical and encrypted defence technologies for Indian defence platforms from the US. The US sanctions on the import of Iranian crude oil will be the focussed during the talks.
India-US 2+2 Dialogue was announced during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s meeting with US President Donald Trump in June 2017. The dialogue has been canceled twice in the last 14 months before finally being scheduled for 6th Septemeber 2018.
