The International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples was observed across the world on 9th August 2018.
The International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples was observed with an aim to strengthen international cooperation for solving problems faced by indigenous peoples in areas such as human rights, the environment, education, health and social development.
The International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples-2018, the theme was ‘Indigenous peoples’ migration and movement’.
The International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples-2018 theme focuses on the current situation of indigenous territories, the root causes of their migration; and their trans-border movement and displacement. It seeks to explore the challenges and ways-out to revitalize indigenous peoples’ identities and encourage the protection of their rights.
The United Nations General Assembly on 23rd December 1994, proclaimed 9th August as the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples through its resolution 49/214.
The date 9th August marks the day of the first meeting of the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations of the Sub-Commission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights in 1982.
The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) through its Resolution on ‘Rights of Indigenous Peoples’ proclaimed the year 2019 as the ‘International Year of Indigenous Languages’.
