World No Tobacco Day Observed On 31st May 2018 Theme Significance History

World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) is observed every year on 31st May around the world meant to spread awareness about how tobacco consumption in any forms including smoking can be dangerous for human health.

World No Tobacco Day also aims to encourage people around the world for a 24-hour period of abstinence from all forms of tobacco consumption.

World No Tobacco Day-2018 this year theme is "Tobacco and Heart Disease".

World No Tobacco Day-2018 theme concerns the tobacco influence on cardiovascular health that has claimed millions of lives every year around the world.

World No Tobacco Day was first declared by WHO’s World Health Assembly Resolution WHA42.19 in 1988. Since then, the WHO has supported World No Tobacco Day every year, linking each year to a different tobacco-related theme.

Tobacco Addiction Effects

Tobacco contains ‘Nicotine’, a drug that causes addiction. Smoking Cigarettes and consuming other forms of tobacco have an addictive effect on human health.

Several studies in the past have emphasised on the consequence of smoking on various other organs like heart, lungs and tongue.

According to World Health Organization (WHO), Tobacco addiction kills more than 7 million people every year and costs households and governments over US$ 1.4 trillion through healthcare expenditure and lost productivity.
