India Celebrates Labour Day Or International Workers Day On 1st May 2018- Details, Importance, Celebrations, History, Origin

India celebrates Labour Day or International Workers Day on 1st May 2018 to honor & acknowledge the contribution of working men and women.

Labour Day is also known as 'May Day' in India. It is observed annually on the first day of the month of May.

International Workers Day which is a synonym to ‘Labour Day’ is celebrated around the world. It is observed as a national holiday in India and around 80 countries of the world.

Labour Day History in India

Labour Day in India was first celebrated in Madras (now Chennai) on May 1, 1923. It was initiated by the Labour Kisan Party of Hindustan (India). The leader of the party, Comrade Singaravelar arranged two meetings in Madras to celebrate the occasion.

Labour Day Celebrations

The Labour Day is celebrated as the day for protests in India and many parts around the world. On this day, working men and women participate in processions to defend their rights and safeguard their interests.

On Labour Day, many labor organisations and trade unions or associations unite together with their processions or demonstrations in order to make their proposed reforms effective in less time.

The Labour Day is also celebrated as the Maharashtra Diwas and Gujarat Diwas in the states of Maharashtra and Gujarat in India. 

Origin

The Labour Day origin came back to 1st May 1886, on this day, labor unions in the USA decided to go on a strike with the demand that workers should not be allowed to work more than 8 hours a day.

Although the protests in the U.S. didn't lead to any significant results, yet it helped establish the 8-hour work day norm in India and other countries in the world.
