A small island in Manipur named as Karang becomes the first cashless island of India.
The announcement was made at the Digital India initiative programme organised by Union Information of Electronics and information technology.
Karang Island is the small island located in the middle of Loktak which is the largest freshwater lake in Northeast India.
The Human Resource development Ministry will be providing the cash swipe machines to ensure 100% cashless transactions.
Most of the people living in Karang have opted cashless transactions.
The people living in Karang adopt e-wallets, United Payment Interface, Aadhaar Payment System etc.
Earlier in Manipur, Phailen becomes the first cashless village in Manipur on 18th December 2016.
