Indian Scientist from National Agri-Food Biotechnology Institute (NABI), first agri-food biotechnology institute located in Mohali, has developed a colored variety of wheat after 8-years of research.
This colorful wheat sowing has been done in Punjab from Patiala, Jalandhar to 700 acres in Madhya Pradesh from Vidisha.
The colorful wheat is available in purple, black, and blue colors and have been approved by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) for human consumption.
This colored wheat has an ample amount of anthocyanin and anthocyanin which is an antioxidant
This colored wheat chapatis or rotis will help prevent diseases related to lifestyle diseases such as heart diseases and obesity.
Price of colored wheat products will be higher due to lower yield and benefit transfer to farmers, but compared to the price of milled rice, which that sells from Rs 22 per kilogram (kg) to as high as Rs 150 per kg, colored wheat flour price would be much lower with significantly higher health benefits
