India was placed at the 81st position among 180 countries in the Global Corruption Perception Index (CPI) for the year 2017. It was ranked in the release by the NGO Transparency International.
Transparency International release marked India among the "worst offenders" in terms of graft and press freedom in the Asia Pacific region.
In the Corruption Perception Index (CPI) 2016, India was in the 79th place among 176 countries with 40 score, but it has dropped by two ranks scoring the same 40 on the scale among 180 countries in 2017.
The Corruption Perception Index (CPI) ranks 180 countries. It uses a scale of 0 to 100, where 0 is highly corrupt and 100 is very clean. It is based on their distinguish levels of corruption in the public sector. The CPI is compiled by using data from World Bank, World Economic Forum (WEF) and other institutions
In CPI latest ranking of 2017, a top 5 countries include New Zealand ranked 1st scoring 89, Denmark ranked 2nd scoring 88, Finland positioned 3rd with 85 scores, Norway ranked 4th and Switzerland ranked 5th with the same score of 85.
In CPI latest ranking of 2017, a bottom 3 country includes Syria, South Sudan and Somalia attaining lowest 178th, 179th 180th ranks respectively with scores of 14, 12 and 9, respectively.
India & Neighboring countries include Bhutan ranked 26th, China ranked 77th, India ranked 81st, Sri Lanka ranked 91st, Pakistan placed at 117th position, Nepal ranked 122nd, Myanmar ranked 130th and Bangladesh ranked 143rd position
