In this consequential development of India, the Union Cabinet approved the introduction of the Consumer Protection Bill-2017 on 20th December 2017, to revise the Consumer Protection Act, 1986.This will now be proposed in Lok Sabha during the current Winter Session.
The proposed bill provides for the creation of a Central Consumer Protection Authority for the first time, which will rectify the consumer grievances and to ensure rigorous action against unfair trade practices.
The Central Protection Authority will effectively act as a national regulator for consumer rights and complaints. It will also take up class-action cases, raised by a group of consumers with the same set of complaints.
The new bill will ensure to deal with issues arising out of disputes with regard to online purchases. Currently, there exists no law for refunds or dispute settlement regarding online shopping.
The new bill will also have provisions for the penalty, banning and jail terms in case of food adulteration and lawsuit of celebrities endorsing products with misleading advertisements.
