Sonia Gandhi was named interim Congress president on 10 August 2019, after the Congress Working Committee (CWC) announcement.
Earlier, the CWC accepted the resignation of Ex-President Rahul Gandhi.
Many party leaders, including state chiefs and MPs, suggested Rahul Gandhi remain in the post. However, he refused the proposal.
Therefore, after a marathon meeting of the CWC, decided to name Sonia Gandhi as the interim party president.

Sonia Gandhi is an Italian-born Indian politician who was president of the Indian National Congress from 1998–2017 and chairperson of the United Progressive Alliance (2004– till now), a coalition of center-left parties.
