P Gururaja has opened India’s medal account on the inaugural day of the 21st Commonwealth Games, winning ‘Silver’ in the men's 56kg category of weightlifting on 5th April 2018.
Indian weightlifter P Gururaja achieved his best by lifting a total of 249kg weight (111kg +138 kg) to finish second for snatch and overall lift.
Malaysia's three-time Commonwealth Championships medalist Muhammad Izhar Ahmed claimed his best by lifting a total of 261 kg weight (117 kg+144 kg) to finish first claiming ‘Gold Medal’ for snatch and overall lift.
Earlier, P Gururaja has won the ‘Bronze Medal’ at the 2017 Commonwealth Games held in Australia.
P Gururaja also called Gururaja Poojary was born on 15 August 1992 (age25 years) to a truck driver’s family in Kundapur, Karnataka, India.
P Gururaja also an employee of Indian Air Force (IAF), started his weightlifting career back in 2010.
P Gururaja had won ‘Gold Medal’ in the 2016 Commonwealth Senior Weightlifting Championship, lifting a personal best of 249kg (108+141) held in Penang. Earlier that year, he had also won ‘Gold Medal’ at the South Asian Games.
