World Children's Day, also known as Universal Children's Day, was first observed on November 20, 1954, with the goal of promoting international cooperation, raising awareness among children around the world, and improving children's welfare.
The UN General Assembly enacted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child on November 20, 1959, which is a significant occasion. The UN General Assembly adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child on this day in 1989.
Since 1990, World Children's Day has also commemorated the date on which the United Nations General Assembly adopted both the Declaration and the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
Mothers and fathers, teachers, nurses, and doctors, government leaders and civil society activists, religious and community elders, corporate titans, and media moguls, as well as young people and children themselves, can all play an important role in making World Children's Day relevant to their societies, communities, and nations.
Future Children's Day provides every one of us with an inspiring starting point for advocating, promoting, and celebrating children's rights, which we can then translate into discussions and actions that will help build a better world for children.
The COVID-19 situation has culminated in a child rights crisis this year. The costs of the epidemic for children are immediate and may endure a lifetime if not handled.
It is time for generations to come together and reinvent the kind of world we want to build. On November 20, children will envisage a better world. What are your plans?
"Investing in our future requires investing in our children," is the theme of International Children's Day.
Every year, the United Nations (UN) designates a specific theme for World Children Day in order to raise awareness among children, foster unity, and improve children's well-being.
