The First Gender Neutral HPV Vaccine in India: Dose, About, Detail 

MSD Pharmaceuticals India released India's first gender-neutral Human Papillomavirus  Vaccine(HPV) on Wednesday 29 September 2021, which is expected to help lower the burden of HPV-related disease in both girls and boys. The GARDASIL 9 vaccine is a nine-valent Human Papillomavirus vaccination (HPV).

Cervical cancer is the second leading cause of mortality in India, and HPV is the most common cause. Every year, around 1,22,000 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer, and over 67,000 women die from it. Furthermore, India accounts for more than a quarter of all cervical cancer deaths worldwide. There are about 100 different types of the virus, with 13 of them being known to cause cancer. About 70 percent of cervical cancer cases are caused by two kinds of HPV: type 16 and type 18.

Who Is Eligible for Vaccine

Vaccines can prevent cervical cancer in girls and women if they are administered before they are exposed to HPV. The vaccine may not be as effective once someone has been exposed to HPV. Vaginal and vulvar cancer can both be prevented with the HPV vaccine. In women and men, the vaccine can prevent genital warts, anal cancers, and mouth, head, neck, throat, and head cancers. Furthermore, vaccination of guys may assist to protect girls from the virus by reducing transmission. Girls between the ages of 9 and 26 and boys between the ages of 9 and 15 can receive the vaccine.

What is the maximum number of dosages that can be given?

GARDASIL 9 is a nano-valent vaccine administered as an intramuscular injection over the course of six months in three doses. For cervical, vulvar, vaginal, and anal cancer; precancerous or dysplastic lesions; genital warts; and chronic infections caused by HPV, a 3-dose regimen is scheduled at 0, 2, and 6 months in girls aged 9 to 26 years. The same 3-dose schedule is recommended for males aged 9 to 15 years to prevent HPV infections such as anal cancer, penile cancer, and genital warts.
