The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on 12th September 2018 has approved the proposal for electrification of balance un-electrified Broad Gauge Routes of Indian Railways.
The Broad Gauge Routes consists of 108 sections covering 13675 route kilometers (16540 track kilometers) that will be electrified at a cost of Rs 12134.50 crore by 2021-2022.
The 100% electrification of Broad Gauge of Indian Railways, is mainly for missing links and last mile connectivity. It will enhance the operational efficiency, enhance the line capacity, and improve the average speed of trains.
The 100% electrification of Broad Gauge of Indian Railways will also reduce the use of imported fossil fuels, i.e improve the energy security of the nation.
After the proposed 100%electrification there would be a reduction in the consumption of high-speed diesel oil by about 2.83 billion liters per annum and a reduction in GHG emissions which will also reduce the environmental impact of Railways.
Recently, the major trunk routes on IR network have already been electrified and are operational.
