Mitosis and meiosis, which are both forms of division of the nucleus in eukaryotic cells, share some similarities, but also exhibit distinct differences that lead to their very different outcomes.
1. Mitosis takes place in the somatic cells of the body but Meiosis takes place in a germ cell.
2. Mitosis occurs in both sexually as well as the asexually reproducing organism but Meiosis occurs only sexually reproducing organism.
3. Mitosis the cell divide only once but in Meiosis two cell division, the first and second meiotic division.
4. Mitosis DNA replication takes place during interphase one but Meiosis DNA replication takes place during interphase one but not interphase two.
5. Mitosis interphase occurs prior to each division but Meiosis interphase precedes only in Meiosis one, it does not occur prior to meiosis two.
6. Mitosis the DNA replicates once for one cell division but Meiosis the DNA replicate once for two cell division.
7. Mitosis prophase is comparatively simple but in Meiosis prophase is complicated and divided into leptotene, zygotene, pachytene, diplotene, and diakinesis.
8. Mitosis the duration of prophase is short, usually of a few hours but Meiosis prophase is comparatively longer and may take days.
