Bangladesh Government took a revolutionary decision to eliminate the quota system from government services in the country.
Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina made an official announcement on 11th April 2018 that she will be abolishing the quota system for government jobs after thousands of students marched in protest across the country against a reservation policy of setting aside jobs for special groups. The students began the protests against discriminatory quotas for government jobs, leaving scores of people injured at the Dhaka University.
As per the Bangladesh government's reservation policy existing quota system, 56 % of jobs in the public sector are reserved for children of freedom fighters, women, ethnic minorities, people with disabilities and citizens of some backward districts.
The protesters, in turn, have been demanding the reservation to be reduced by 10 % to it.
The protesting students and job-seekers also demanded that a job applicant should not be given any privilege of a reservation more than once.
Sheikh Hasina’s father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman who was the architect of Bangladesh's independence from Pakistan earlier in the past he has rejected the demands to scrap the reservation system.
