Indian Air Force (IAF) Flying Officer, Avani Chaturvedi became the first Indian woman to fly a Fighter Jet on 19th February 2018.
Avani Chaturvedi in her first solo flight flew off the fighter jet, named MiG-21 ‘Bison’, from IAF base in Jamnagar, Gujarat.
MiG-21 ‘Bison’ is a supersonic fighter jet. It can accommodate only one pilot and has virtually the highest landing and take-off speed in the world- 340 kmph.
Avani Chaturvedi had also undertaken solo flights with aircraft like the Pilatus PC-7 turboprops, Kiran and Hawk Jet Trainers.
Avani Chaturvedi along with two other women pilots namely Ms. Bhawana Kanth and Ms. Mohana Singh had already achieved the pride of becoming first combat pilots to undergo fighter pilot training in the IAF.
All the three women were commissioned as flying officers into the fighter stream after basic training in June 2016 on "an experimental basis" for five years initially.
Avani Chaturvedi achievement brings India to join with the countries like Britain, Pakistan, Israel and the United States where women fly fighter jets.
