The Assam Government will observe and celebrate the World Rhino Day on 22nd September 2018.
The Assam government will mark the World Rhino Day-2018, to spread public awareness on protection of One-horned Rhinoceros (Pachyderm) which are pride of the Assam state.
Chief Minister of Assam, Sarbananda Sonowal made the announcement at the 10th meeting of State Board for Wildlife in Janata Bhawan, Guwahati on 22nd February 2018.
CM Sarbananda Sonowal informed that the World Rhino Day-2018will be dedicated to about 2,500 Rhino population in Assam.
CM Sarbananda Sonowal further added the Assam government will also launch the State Rhino Project in line with National Rhino Project for protecting them from threats of poaching.
One-horned Rhinoceros is the largest of the Asian Rhinos. Earlier, they were highly spread in the Gangetic plains region, but now they are restricted to small habitats in Indo-Nepal terrain and North Bengal and Assam
In India, One-horned Rhinoceros are mostly found in Kaziranga, Orang, Pobitara, Jaldapara in Assam, Dudhwa National Park in UP. Kaziranga National Park hosts two-thirds of the world’s Great One-horned rhinoceros (68% of the worldwide population).
One-horned Rhinoceros has been listed as vulnerable on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species.
In total there are five species of rhino’s: Black, White, Greater One-Horned Rhinos, Javan and Sumatran. All Rhinoceros are herbivores, they only consume plants to feed themselves.
World Rhino Day is celebrated globally on 22nd September every year. It was first introduced by the World Wildlife Fund- South Africa in the year 2010.
