Asima Chatterjee was born on 23rd September 1917 in Kolkata, Bengal. She grew up in Kolkata (formerly known as Calcutta).
Asima Chatterjee completed her education from the University of Calcutta. At her time it was very unusual for women to take science as a mainstream subject. She graduated from Calcutta University with honours in 1936. Then she completed her master degree in Organic Chemistry.
known for her work in Organic Chemistry. She received a Doctorate of Science in 1944. At that time in India no other woman taking such level of research interest in Organic Chemistry field.
In 1944, Asima Chatterjee became the first Indian woman to receive a doctorate of Science.
Asima Chatterjee did research focused primarily on the medicinal properties of Indian plants. She contributed to the development of drugs for Malaria and Epilepsy like deadly diseases.
Asima Chatterjee one of the first Indian woman scientist from Chemistry to get prestigious civilian award Padma Bhushan for her meritorious achievements in her field.
Asima Chatterjee left this world at the age of 90 years in Kolkata.
