The Appointments Committee of Cabinet (ACC) has issued an order to appoint M Nageshwar Rao, presently working as Joint Director at the CBI, as the new Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
M Nageshwar Rao will take over the post and functions of CBI Director with immediate effect.
M Nageshwar Rao will replace CBI Director Alok Verma who was supposed to retire in December 2018 but was terminated from his service by the government on 23rd Octobr 2018, due to a prolonged case of bribery allegations between Alok Verma and former CBI Director Rakesh Asthana.
M Nageshwar Rao is a 1986 batch Odisha cadre officer, joined the CBI as Joint Director and was promoted as Additional Director in 2018 itself.
CBI is the apex investigative police agency in India. It derives power to investigate from Delhi Special Police Establishment Act, 1946.
CBI was established in 1941 as the Special Police Establishment. It was renamed to present nomenclature in 1963.
CBI is headed by Director, an IPS officer of DGP rank. He is selected as per the provisions of Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) Act, 2003.
The CBI Director is selected by a collegium comprising Prime Minister, Chief Justice of India and Leader of Opposition or leader of the largest party in opposition in Lok Sabha.
