World Athletics has given the Woman of the Year Award to legendary Indian long jumper Anju Bobby George for developing talent in the country and pushing for gender equality.
Anju, 44, was named for the award at the world body's annual awards night held virtually on Wednesday. Anju is the only Indian to have won a medal at the World Championships, with a long jump bronze in the 2003 edition. She is the first Indian to get an award from the sport's international governing body at its annual awards ceremony.
The prize is granted to a lady who has devoted her entire life to the sport of athletics. After Ethiopia's double Olympic champion Derartu Tulu, Anju is the second recipient of the coveted prize, which was established in 2019.
In appreciation of her contribution to the growth of sport, the world athletics body awarded PT Usha the Veteran Pin in 2019. From 2014 to 2018, a comparable award known as the 'Women in Athletics Award' was granted to recognise outstanding achievements and contributions made to developing, encouraging, and strengthening the participation of women and girls at all levels of the sport.
