The Uttar Pradesh Yogi Adityanath government has approved the proposal to change Allahabad's name to Prayagraj on October 16, 2018. This major city of Uttar Pradesh will now be known by the new name Prayagarh.
It is believed that Mughal emperor Akbar changed Prayag's name to Allahabad (Allah Almighty). Also, recently Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had said that the saints were constantly demanding to change Allahabad's name to pPrayagraj.
From Akbar Nama and Iye Akbaris and other Mughal historical books, it is known that Akbar laid the foundations of the fort in Prayagraj around 1574.
It is believed that Akbar established a new town here, which he named Allahabad. Until then it was known as Prayagraj itself. Apart from this, it has been called Prayagraj in Ramcharit Manas. This is mentioned in the Valmiki Ramayana that the water of confluence was the anointing of kings in ancient times.
From the 102 chapters to the 107th chapter of the most ancient and authentic Purana Matsya Purana, the significance of this shrine is described. It says that Prayag is the region of Prajapati where the Ganga and Yamuna flows.
