Imperialism and Colonialism, definition and differences

Imperialism v/s Colonialism

IMPERIALISM:

An act in which a ruler (king, queen, warlord, govt) captures someone else's territory to merge it with their own country forming a new one single larger country. This is what Hitler was looking to do. Great a bigger greater German empire. In colonialism, there needs to be some settlement by Imperial power in the land of discovery or colony.

COLONIALISM

An act in which a foreign ruler (king, queen, warlord, govt) captures someone else's territory not to merge it a form one larger entity but to have the captured territory as a separate entity called a colony and be exploited for economic and commercial purposes.

This is what the Britishers did to a lot of countries in the world. Never was Britain the sum total of all territories, it was always the island but it had colonies far and sunder. It was never attempted by the Brits that India is a part of their country, it was always a colony.

In imperialism, there is no compulsion by the imperial power to settle down but only administer and control the market in the colony.
